Kubota records sounds on magnetic tapes and then mounts the tape horizontally on wood panels. The viewer is given a hint, but must forge his or her own connection between what is presented visually in the panel and what one imagines its audio contents to be. His work examines the relationships between symbolism and its implication, as well as images and narratives. He has developed this idea over several series including Journal, Music, Site, and, Literatures.
The series Journal consists of sounds captured in the artist's daily life. The title of each work corresponds to the sound or noises that are recorded on a particular date and time (e.g. "2008.4.25 03:32 - 04:43").
